Over-the-air TV on Xbox One

Here is an overview of the best options available that will work with cable or an antenna. Cord-cutters have much better options, but there are some tricks to reduce or eliminate your cable DVR fees. All of the products mentioned here operate a little differently, some are aimed at watching on the couch while others enable you to stream live and recorded shows anywhere with an internet connection. See what works best for you. TiVo also makes a great DVR without subscription fees that works with an antenna. It has 4 tuners, internal storage, automatic channel skipping, unified search across TV and streaming apps such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon, and a mobile app for watching recordings. It may be the only device you need connected to your TV. Read the full FAQ here.

The most important of which is the DVR guide. In order to schedule show recordings, the DVR requires a means of knowing what times your favorite shows air. Cable subscribers already have a TV guide with their cable subscription. However, we are using a DVR without cable. So we will either have to pay a monthly or one-time fee for a DVR guide.

A Tivo DVR has a built-in tuner, but DirecTV DVRs do not. The DVR also must have an RF coaxial input port. Attach the antenna to the DVR’s RF coaxial input port.

This is an inexpensive device that will split your OTA signal into multiple sub-signals, allowing you to push free TV broadcasting to multiple TVs. So if you have a weak or marginal signal coming from your antenna, splitting it will have a negative effect. Finally the more distance the signal has to travel, the weaker the signal becomes. So fewer feet in coaxial cable, means stronger signal, equating to better picture quality.

Be careful with 3-way splitters. Signal loss can vary substantially across the three outputs. Meaning if used, two TVs could work fine, while the third would suffer from a weaker signal. I did some research and found an example of a Splitter that addresses this issue: Click here to read the reviews: As I eluded too above, we are trying to remove as many variables as possible from the installation. If successful go ahead and connect three TVs.

And again, test the signal. If any point during these steps you notice that you have lost signal strength, it is time look into buying an amplifier.

You may not need to fiddle with an antenna at all, because the cable company may still be piping in the local networks, even if you aren’t an active TV subscriber. I believe they are mandated to do so if you are a TV subscriber, and they often don’t make a distinction for internet-only subscribers. It’s worth a test, anyway, after you cancel TV service. They may have a flimsy blocking mechanism, but, unless they are doing something illegal, the cable company can’t be selling you something they are mandated to provide.

OTA is the way to go here.

Mar 25,  · Everything’s hooked into my receiver with best possible connections. I mostly watch through TiVo, switching to the direct HD input when I’m watching something in HD. The nice thing is that with the S-vid/stereo output from the cable box, I can record HD programs on TiVo and watch them later in without screwing up other TiVO stuff.

I don’t know what inputs you have on the TV since I don’t know what you have there but hopefully it has two HDMI and a yellow composite connection if you want to watch directly from the Tivo. Limitation of DVD recorder inputs The issue is going to come with both the cable box and Tivo connecting to the Magnavox because there is only one input. There is technically a second but it’s labeled “antenna” which is likely for OTA use as aguen mentioned.

You can try connecting the cable box or Tivo to this port and simply tune the Magnavox to channel 3 but I don’t know for sure if it will work correctly that way. Alternatively, you could just swap cables between them but honestly that’s a PITA. If so, especially if it’s a newer model this could be so much easier to setup. Cable box to DVD recorder Lets focus on just the cable box because the same hookup will apply to the Tivo as well.

You could probably use the second set of ports but I don’t know anything about the Tivo to know if it prefers one or the other or anything like that. Those cables would need to go to the same IN ports on the Magnavox as the cable box which is why I said there needs to be an alternate solution such as the stereo receiver doing the switching or one of them connected via RF. This can be a problem because if you needed to use component hookup above, the yellow composite hookup may be shared with that and it may be “in use”.

Without knowing what TV you have, the TV connections are just assumptions but should generally work.

One thing that scares potential cable-cutters is the prospect of choosing an antenna for their home. Now how exactly do you choose the right antenna? Simple—just worry about three things: Once there, you enter your address. The Title for the report and the Antenna Height are optional. You just need to remember to look at the Strength, Direction, and Band of the different stations in the area.

Connect an Ethernet cable from the TiVo box to an Ethernet port on your router or wall. Using the TiVo menus, select the “Ethernet” networking option: If you are setting up your TiVo box for the first time, during Guided Setup choose “Ethernet” as your networking connection type (if prompted).

You are not tied down to an hdmi cable to ONLY one tv. If you already invested in amazon video, apple tv or netflix you really want to focus on this solution. You will more than likely have all the major devices you already need. You probably have ipads or Roku devices lying around that the kids are watching their shows on those networks as well. So, all of this will play right into what you have already invested. You literally hook up this device to your router, then take your apple-tv or roku device and connect to that.

Now you can stream all your streaming media throughout the house from one location. Here is what the setup looks like in the diagram below. To get a better idea. This allows you to have one spot to stream your shows and to store your recorded shows. Which will then allow everyone the ability to play their shows from various tvs, phones, ipads etc..

This works for me because we have young kids and we of course have bought all this stuff already. So, please keep that in mind you will need to have the following to work: OTA digital antenna, need this one no matter what.

Assuming you have one, your power supply also called a power inserter will have two coaxial cable connections—one labeled SWM, the other labeled IRD. If you have only one receiver to connect, simply connect the IRD output of the power supply to your SWM-compatible receiver. If you have two receivers to connect, then you have two options: If you are not using the SWM2 port, be sure to keep the metal cap terminator connected.

If you are using multiple receivers, do not power them on at once. Rather, power them on one at a time, letting the first start acquiring satellite signal before powering up the next. What are the Flex Ports for? These are used in DIRECTV installations that have more than one dish such as an international dish or, in certain markets, where a separate dish is required for local channels. The SWM has an input for an off-air antenna. You must then use a special splitter, called a diplexer, to separate the two frequencies before connecting the output to a receiver.

How do I record TV shows? May 20, I get all the network broadcast channels in HD. But DVRs have me befuddled.

Back when the set top boxes had the dial-pads on the actual box, and the movie channels were in the single digits, problems that we have now didn’t seem to exist. For over 20 years, my father has held the gold package, which entitles viewers to select from various movie channels, usually premiering new releases and notable titles. I must admit, once the network switched to digital, the channels from to seemed to have an endless selection of movies to choose from.

Some channels were designated to air the new releases, and others were genre specific, which was beneficial for just about everyone. As time passed, more channels in the s disappeared, and the selections became very limited. Overall, the selection of movies has decreased, as well as the number of movie channels that are now in the s. The amount of money spent a month, multiplied by the number of years of spending the extra money for these channels simply do not add up.

To make matters worse, once my father finally updated his television as a Father’s day present to HD, he was told by a Cablevision rep at the store, that HD – DVR cable boxes with HDMI cables are no longer manufactured, and sent him home with an “HD” box, the wrong cables, and incompatible with his new tv. This is unfair to those who are only interested in the basic channels, most often used to keep updated on the news. So, I’m guessing that since the average Joe can’t afford the ridiculous high priced newspaper subscription, they also can no longer stay current with the world through basic tv without forfeiting their antennas and installing the box.

My boyfriend’s mother owns a beach house, which is occupied for only 4 to 5 months out of the year. To keep their basic channels, it was made clear that to do so would require the switch.
